Volunteer with VRRA
VRRA is always looking for volunteers and there are many ways in which
you can help at VRRA. You can volunteer at either VRRA's shelter at Southlands
or at the Vancouver SPCA shelter cleaning rabbit cages in the morning,
volunteer at specific events throughout the year, help out with our newsletter,
join the Events Committee or Education/Outreach Committee, or foster some
of our lovely bunnies. Browse through the sections below for more information
on the many opportunities available. Contact Karen (kawebster@shaw.ca)
for more information, or to get involved.
Current Events Opportunities

Qualifications are: you must be male, 16 years or over and have a rabbit
you love. The bunny must be your's or a bunny you live with and love.
For example, if you and your wife share bunnies to love that's okay but
using your mother's, sister's, girl-friend's, neighbour's rabbit, is not.
All men are clothed - all rabbits are naked (gasp). e-mail: hopalong@vrra.org
or call 604 612-7699 for further information.

Ongoing Opportunities
Shelter Help: VRRA & SPCA
Between the two shelters, VRRA's at Southlands and the SPCA in Vancouver,
we need volunteers to help clean the cages in the mornings and socialize
with the rabbits. The SPCA shelter also requires adoption counselors in
the afternoon.
The SPCA cleaning must be done before noon each day, Monday-Sunday. It
takes about 3 hours. VRRA cleaning hours are more flexible, as we don't
have public viewing hours like the SPCA. This is important work, so please
consider if you can help out at all at either shelter. If you are unable
to commit long-term, we can always use your help on an as-available basis
to help cover when we are short staffed. Training for both shelters is
provided.
Newsletter Committee
Creative? Enjoy writing? Like to gossip about rabbits? Join our Newsletter
Committee! We just sent out our very first newsletter at the end of September
and hope to send them out quarterly. All are welcome to help write content
and brainstorm ideas, among other duties. Most work is done via email,
though there are a few meetings here and there to organize content. It's
a fast-paced, thrill-inducing experience...
Events Committee
VRRA is involved in several events throughout the year: Rabbit Festival,
Southlands Country Fair, VRRA's garage sale, Van Dusen Garden's Celebratory
Saturdays, Animal Rights Day, Fraser Fest, Hyack Festival, Richmond Animal
Wellness Fair, and Vancouver Pet Expo to name a few. We always need volunteers
to help out at booths, to set up and take down, and to help plan and organize.
Have ideas for other events VRRA can hold or be involved with? Let us
know!
Education/Advocacy Committee
A large part of VRRA's mandate is public education. This committee is
just getting off the ground, and we already have lots of great ideas brewing.
We are currently working on having anti-rabbit dumping signs posted in
select Vancouver parks. We are also circulating a petition to stop the
sale of rabbits in pet stores. Other projects may include classroom pets
educational booklets that we will be putting together, and VRRA cloth
rabbits to sell as fund raising. If all goes well, we will be having regular
meetings. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm.
Calendar Committee
This committee is an extension of the Education/Outreach Committee. VRRA
has just released its very first calendar, Men With Buns! Featuring the
black and white photography of Yukiko Onley, the calendar showcases real
Vancouver men with their pet rabbits, many of whom are rescued buns.
This committee is loads of fun. We do everything from selecting the models
to designing the layout. Working closely with Yukiko, we create the calendar
from scratch. If all goes well this year, we will do a another calendar
for 2007. Check back for more details.
